What my bookworm ate this week
The Girl with the Dragon Heart Written by Stephanie Burgis pages Published by Bloomsbury Publication date: 9th August Summary from Goodreads : Once upon a time, in a beautiful city famous for chocolate and protected by dragons, there was a girl so fearless that she dared to try to tell the greatest story of all: the truth. But Silke has her own dark, secret reasons for not trusting fairies … Can Silke find out the truth about the fairies while keeping her own secrets hidden?
Brilliant world-building, lovable characters and a writing style which made the story flow effortlessly. I had a lot of questions about the magic system in the world so I want to find out more! Aventurine is a fantastic character — the dragon turned into a girl in search of an adventure in the first book. This second book is told by Silke, a street-smart, fast-talking orphan who befriends Aventurine and uses her eloquence to get out of some pretty tricky situations. I imagine she will make for a fun narrator!
It sounds like a modern fairytale and I love fairytales. So excited to read this book! Share this: Tweet. Like this: Like Loading July 4, at pm. Christina Reid says:. July 5, at am. July 8, at pm. That was something you couldn't ignore: no matter what you were thinking, the dragon's soul could hear your thoughts, too; it was also how he communicated with you.
Nevertheless, you couldn't travel with someone—regardless of how handsome he was—knowing he was going to be walking around buck naked in the cursed snowstorm. Since you needed all of the clothes you had on your body, you had refused to lend Lukas any of yours. As a result, Lukas had told you that if you really wanted him to wear human clothing, you would have to find it yourself, and that meant going all the way back to the castle town to find some.
Unfortunately, since your escape had gone so abruptly, you didn't have any money on you. Those without money either had to resort to begging or stealing, and you didn't hav. Maids were scampering to keep the roof clean of as much snow as possible, and the numbers of soldiers increased for the case of an emergency. As you remembered from the night before, a handful of nobles from the neighboring castles had taken a quick voyage to witness the magnificent sight: a dragon being sacrificed. The three days was up, and in that time, the winter only grew worse. A blizzard was now considered part of a normal day.
Only the hardiest of animals could survive in such a brittle environment. What disturbed you most of all wasn't knowing whether or not the sacrifice would actually work or not; it was whether or not you would have a job after all of this. Surely with there being only one dragon left in the world, it would have died of loneliness, and if there were no dragons, there wouldn't be a need for a dragonkeeper. Still, there was little you could do to pr. In fact, it was almost like your relationship completely changed when he became a dragon: you didn't have to struggle to catch up to him because you were always with him, and he never talked ill of you because there was no need to talk in the middle of the night.
You could understand why they gave the place such a name: the trees were bare and stuck out of the ground like skeletal hands reaching out to grab unsuspecting victims, no wind howled through the thickets, and the little snow that fell through the bony branches carried a strange black color of dust making the floor around the forest dark and eerie. If that assumption couldn't have been proven true in the past, it was certainly starting to become valid at the given moment. After stealing some clothes for Lukas, the two of you hadn't exchanged a single word since.
You didn't even bother asking the dragon to slow down because you had a feeling he would only sneer and throw back some insolent remark about how weak you were as a human. Back at the castle, you and the dragons had been provided with food and shelter. Out here in the lawless wilderness, the blizzard raged on fiercer than you had ever seen.
At the castle, you had the fortune of sleeping r. Today, breakfast consisted of yet another rabbit and a small bird whose species was beyond recognition thanks to having its feathers plucked and its skin already roasted. Why are you having problems eating right now?

The dragon rolled his sapphire eyes as though you had asked that question a thousand times over. While you were eating, Lukas looked over his shoulder. You could only imagine how he would act if he had been an actual dragon. You frowned. From the little time you had spent with him, you knew that forgetting would have been a complete possibility.
You kno. Think of an eggplant—an oversized, glowing, wriggling, slimy, toothy, tentacle-infested eggplant. Add the element of obscene disgust, throw in a little nauseating scents in the mix, and sprinkle a dash of bubbling noises, and the perfect formula of a formidable and grotesque abomination of a monster is created. The dragon sighed. Apparently Lukas. From such a close distance, you were able to see that there was something of a color-changing film of faded purple and blue swirls dancing on the surface like a soap bubble. View Gallery. Then, his voice grew louder until you could clearly hear his voice escalating into a roar.
Of all the people this could have happened to! Perhaps Emil was wrong about his brother not killing you after his soul parted from your heart. Mathias looked down and made a strange grimace. It was an expression you had never expected to see on his face. Shouldn't the force field prevent him from coming inside? While you knew you needed to get off the ice as soon as possible, doing so proved to be harder than expected. In your state of panic, keeping your footing with such a lack of friction was nearly impossible.
While Lukas had claimed that your destination would have been sighted within only two days of travelling, the thick wind and snow had obscured your vision to only a few meters in front of you. Now, after many days of travelling and trudging through the snow with netiss fat still stuck to your cloak and hair, the mountain was poking up from beyond the treetops at a grand distance. Beyond the bowled valley of trees melding into the rocky terrain, an ominous peak lay rising above the clouds buried away from the snow.
It was much closer than you had expected since you hadn't been able to see it as early as Lukas had predicted. Still, there was the problem of how you were going to go about scaling the mountain without Lukas' wings. Lukas remained silent. You rolled your eyes. More hetalia stories by catsrule Dragon! I know the humans have said that my brother and I were the only dragons left in the world, but only five of us…How is that possible? Maybe they had an awakening moment and decided being human was better. That or they just forgot somewhere along the way. He was so young. He has to still be around. The Dragonheart by FangirlSmith Dragon! Who dares speak to me?!
The voice was almost familiar, but the manner in which the voice was speaking was far too different than anyone you had heard before. With no prospect of there being a speaker anywhere in sight, you began looking around for the source with the Sapphire Flames guiding your vision. Is someone here? I saw him die. Could it be…? I shoul. It would have been much better than having to feed the dragons their daily helpings of food and clean up after them.
In a blink of an eye, he had left you behind to wherever it is dragons go to when they die. You had never bothered to ask. There had been many questions you had wanted to ask him. Wait— What?!
