Once we traded poems like photos of women whose beauty tested God's faith. A woman was calling me back to bed so I said I'd call back. But I never did. The deep forlorn smell of moss and pine behind your stone house, you strumming and singing Lorca, Vallejo, De Andrade, as if each syllable tasted of blood, as if you had all the time in the world.

You knew your angels loved you but you also knew they would leave someone they could not save.

Experiencing God Quotes

Philip Schultz Grandma Climbs Grandma climbs a chair to yell at God for killing her only husband whose only crime was forgetting where he put things. Finally, God misplaced him. Everyone in this house is a razor, a police radio, a bulging vein. It's too late for any of us, Grandma says to the ceiling.

She believes we are chosen to be disgraced and perplexed. She squints at anyone who treats her like a customer, including the toilet mirror, and twists her mouth into a deadly scheme. Late at night I run at the mirror until I disappear. The day is over before it begins, Grandma says, jerking the shade down over its once rosy eye.

She keeps her husband's teeth in a matchbox, in perfumed paraffin; his silk skullcap with its orthodox stains in the icebox, behind Uncle's Jell-O aquarium of floating lowlifes.

There Is A God

I know what Mrs. Einhorn said Mrs. So anticipate that God will start working with you and drawing you to an intimate love relationship that is real and personal. When the love relationship is right, God will be free to begin giving you assignments at His initiative. Whenever you do not seem to be receiving assignments from God, focus on the love relationship and stay there until the assignment comes.

However, they do not create or replace the relationship. He was not referring to someone who has read many books and attended numerous seminars about God.

He was talking about a firsthand, experiential knowledge. We come to truly know God as we experience Him in and around our lives. Many people have grown up attending church and hearing about God all their lives, but they do not have a personal, dynamic, growing relationship with God. They never hear His voice.

They have no idea what God's will is. They do not encounter His love firsthand. They have no sense of divine purpose for their lives. They may know a lot about God, but they don't really know Him. Then God equips the person by the Holy Spirit to accomplish what He assigns. At that time, the church had only seventeen members.

  • Human reason would have immediately ruled out such a large assignment for a small church. They were hoping to receive financial support from our denomination's Home Mission Board to pay the mission pastors' salaries. One pastor was already in the process of relocating to Vancouver when we unexpectedly received word that the mission board would be unable to fund any new work in our area for the next three years.

The church didn't have the funds to do what God had called it to do. When they sought my counsel, I suggested that they first go back to the Lord and clarify what God had said to them. If this was merely something they wanted to do for God, God would not be obligated to provide for them. A few months later, the church received some surprising news. Six years earlier, I had led a series of meetings in a church in California. An elderly woman had approached me and said she wanted to will part of her estate for use in mission work in our city.

The associational office had just received a letter from an attorney in California informing them that they would be receiving a substantial check from that dear woman's estate.

The association could now provide the funds needed by the sponsoring church. The amount was sufficient to firmly establish all three churches this faithful congregation had launched. Did God know what He was doing when He told a seventeen-member church to begin three new congregations? He already knew the funds would not be available from the missions agency, and He was also aware of the generosity of an elderly saint in California.

None of these details caught God by surprise. That small church in Vancouver had known in their minds that God could provide. But through this experience they developed a deeper trust in their all knowing God.
