The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. So truly this is like a time of famine because of the high price for the food.
But also remember that this is all spiritually speaking:. Later in Revelation we see this same time in history shown as a time when these two witnesses the Word and the Spirit prophesied while in mourning because of the oppression of man. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. Spiritually, you will die for doing this. So what Revelation is showing is: your withholding of ministering all of the Word may create a famine of hearing the Word, but you better not try to hurt or blaspheme — speak disrespectfully of the Word nor the Spirit of God!
Also, the rain being spoken of in the scripture above Revelation concerning the two witnesses is that of spiritual rain from heaven when God is pleased with his people and he sends his spiritual blessings on the gathering of the people.
Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
But when God was not pleased with his people, he would send a famine. And so in this post we are speaking of the famine of the black horse rider, because God is not pleased. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better. This is in agreement with the gospel being likened to new wine, not old wine. This anointing is that of his Holy Spirit.
It was the burning oil in the candlestick that gave light to the Old Testament tabernacle. This burning oil represents the presence of the Holy Spirit in the worship, and in the individual. So what understanding does the black horse rider give you and I today? Do we worship where there is a famine of the Word of God? Do we sit to hear music, songs, and a sermon that contains a small morsel of real substance from the Word of God?
Are they disrespecting the Word of God by adding to it additional ideas, and taking away from the original teachings? Is there a particular time in history when selling the Word of God for gain took root in a strong way? Many of the patterns in Revelation have their type in history. The beginning of the sale of the Word for gain was a common injustice of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Bible was kept chained to the pulpit. The common people were not allowed access to it, nor could most read it because it was kept in a language they could not understand. By this the Catholic Church controlled and manipulated the use of the Word to their own advantage, and at a great cost to the people. Truly the ministry of the Catholic Church had the spirit of the black horse rider!
Additionally, this manipulation of the Word for personal advantage would cause the people to:. The Roman Catholic Church is spiritually identified as coming to full power during the Pergamos church age. A time in history when Satan was given a special seat of authority, right among where many sincere people were still trying to serve God. And these sincere Christians then became the target of persecution! Hag Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.
Hag Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD. You are commenting using your WordPress. Or does this ancient imagery provide an essential perspective for those of us living in the 21st century?
The answer may surprise you.
In the biblical book of Revelation, Jesus Christ opens a scroll sealed in seven places. As each seal is broken, specific conditions and events are revealed. These are prophecies that affect the entire world. The first four opened seals release four different-colored horses and their threatening riders, freeing them to gallop across human history.
But what do they symbolize? Without a way to solve this mystery, we can only speculate. But fortunately, the key that unlocks their meaning is available. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer. This horseman has often been confused with the returning Christ described in chapter 19 of Revelation, because He also rides a white horse.
Many believe that the first horseman of the apocalypse pictures the gradual triumph of organized Christian religion beginning 2, years ago. But Revelation 19 reveals a different individual than chapter 6.
The returning Christ is dressed in a robe stained with blood, wearing many diadems, not a single laurel wreath. He is accompanied by many angelic beings on white horses, and His weapon is not a bow but the sword of His mouth. And this is exactly what we find in the explanation that Jesus Himself gave to some of His disciples on the Mount of Olives more than 60 years before this vision. He told them there about the future progression of world conditions.
What He said is the interpretive key that unlocks the symbolism of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and gives their meaning for today. Just how do they do that? A counterfeit is not easy to spot. Such people present themselves as the only ones who can solve all problems. More often than not a false messiah will combine religion and politics in an effort to be accepted as the anointed one. Take the fourth-century Roman emperor Constantine. All of them took advantage of the language of religion and its imagery, stirring up religious fervor, and they got their followers to virtually worship them because they seemed to have all the answers.

They also brought great destruction on the world, including their own people. Millions died because of their violent rule, their purges and their wars. Almost every one of these false messiahs led their deluded followers into war. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Opening the third seal: Who is the one riding the black horse? * Revelation
Again he stressed that conflict and war do not necessarily signal the end of this era. War has plagued humanity since the beginning of civilization. War is also the end result of blind obedience to leaders filled with egocentric ambitions. Napoleon Bonaparte was primarily a warrior. But his leadership also brought the red horse at full gallop onto the world scene. Violence and war, domestic and international, characterized his regime. Cynical manipulation of religious sentiment underscored the duplicity of what in pure numbers was arguably one of the most murderous regimes in human history.
The story would be the same: totalitarian cruelty, wrongful imprisonment, and the brutal death of millions.
The red horseman often rides in the wake of the false messiah. False christs bring on total war. When Jesus told His disciples about the conditions that would long precede His return, He was also showing them that human beings have certain tendencies. Like sheep, they follow false messiahs down the path of deception, and they are inclined to accept the inevitability of war.

This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8, people. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense.
Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.
