Why is that?
Irish Skin: What Are Freckles And Why Do They Appear?
Well, to understand why it happens, you'll have to understand where freckles come from in the first place. We all have cells in our skin called melanocytes. These specialized cells are designed to protect us from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun.
They do so by producing a pigmented protein called melanin. Melanin acts like a pair of sunglasses for your skin by making it darker. In many people, these melanocytes are spread out evenly throughout the body, but in others they aren't.

They get bunched up together, resulting in freckles. Melanin, on the other hand, is the protein that produces the color of your skin, your eyes, and your hair.

When more melanin develops on your skin, freckles happen! While freckles seem pretty straightforward on the surface literally , a lot actually goes on behind-the-scenes. When these clusters of melanin are brought out into the light of day, they can get darker. On the flip side, when sunlight is avoided such as during wintertime , your skin spots can fade.
What Causes Freckles?
This means that no one is born with freckles! Areas that are more likely to be exposed, including the face, arms and upper body, will more likely have freckles as the skin produces melanin to shield itself from the sun.
Those with lighter skin and hair pigments are more likely to develop freckles as they will produce more melanin as a response to shield themselves from sun damage. The majority of freckles are harmless and are not a sign of sun damage, with some freckles caused by genetics and therefore not related to the presence of sun damage. However, even with the genetic tendency to develop the spots, using the right sun protection can stop you from developing them - as they won't appear without sun exposure.
If freckles become significantly darker after exposure to the sun or begin changing in size or shape, this can be a vital sign of an increased skin cancer risk. Don't fret though, as in most cases the melanin spots are almost always harmless and don't.

Anyone can get freckles from exposure to the sun, but this should be done safely with the right protection including a water-based SPF.
