But we struggled with infertility. I still did my best to remain optimistic, but during this time I could feel my outlook changing.
More From Plough
Many of my friends and family were announcing their pregnancies during my infertility battle and while I was overjoyed for them, I struggled. I went through surgeries, fertility drugs, daily injections, rounds of IUI, miscarriage of twins, and IVF before I finally became pregnant with my son, Samuel. I felt truly blessed when I became pregnant.
I deeply understood and appreciated that every baby is a gift. During my pregnancy I felt a shift in my perspective once again.
Natalie Dixon (Author of The Silver Lining)
I was much more positive and optimistic, more than I had been in years. Halfway through my pregnancy however, abnormalities were discovered on an ultrasound.
Even during this time I stayed positive. Yes, I was nervous and worried especially because there were so many unknowns, but I had hope and faith that everything would work out okay. Samuel was born just about a month early and was diagnosed at birth with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also known as brittle bones disease. It is a rare genetic condition without a cure.

Because of his condition Samuel breaks bones incredibly easily. He has broken bones from sneezing, coughing, rolling over, trying to stand, and for no reason at all. In his three years he has broken at least thirty bones. Samuel deals with constant pain, relies on a feeding tube for some of his nutrition, needs oxygen at night while sleeping, and struggles with mobility, depending on a wheelchair to get around. He sees over twelve doctors on a regular basis for his condition and will continue to most likely for the rest of his life. In Britain, weather is terrible, clouds are in the sky almost permanently, so a cloud is a negative thing for them.
The idea that every cloud has a silver lining, that is, that there is something wonderful silver inside of those nasty nagging things clouds is a good image to show that you can find good things even in bad things, there is hope. This image is taken from Matthew , where Peter's faith was put on the test. This is the passage: Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified.
